Marystela Lopes

Department: Chemical and Environmental Sciences
Address: University of Limerick
Qualifications: BSc in Chemical Engineering
Email: marystela.lopes@ul.ie
Supervisior: J.J. Leahy

Marystela holds a bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Sergipe. Along her studies she had been engaged in projects of research (CNPq-student) and internship (VALE-Brazil), with emphasis on renewable energy and the environmental field.

Current Project

"CHEMICAL HYDROLYSIS OF BIOMASS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SECOND GENERATION BIOFUELS”

This work is carried out as part of a Full Doctoral Studies Programme through Science without Borders and supported by Capes (Brazil).

Marystela is a PhD Student in University of Limerick/Ireland. Her studies focus on the production of second generation biofuels. Knowing the necessity to reduce consumption of fossil sources and the potential of lignocellulose biomass as source of useful intermediates, such as sugars. The second generation biofuels claim to convert biomass into a versatile platform chemicals, such as furfural, levulinic acid (LA) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The aim of her project is to catalytically convert carbohydrates into valuable chemicals, applying variety of catalysts, homogeneous and heterogeneous. The research will investigate and optimize the hydrolysis of lignocellulose material under less severe process conditions than the current procedures.
