Zhonglai Li joined in Carbolea, University of Limerick in April 2010, and is currently involved in the project of chemical upgrading of bio-oil. His works are the development of low cost and high efficiency catalysts for the improvement of bio-oil quality.

He got his Ph. D degree in 2004 in Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), China, supervised by Prof. Can Li and Prof. Dezheng Wang. His research interests are mainly focused on the development of synthesis of nanomaterials and their application in catalysis.

Between January 2005 and November 2007, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Prof. Justin D. Holmes in the Department of Chemistry at University College Cork, where his pioneering work on the development of catalysts for producing high yields of carbon nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes and carbon nanocages. In November 2007, he took up a PDRA position in Department of Chemical Engineering, Monash University, Australia, where his works are focused on the development of highly activated catalysts for pyrolysis of waste plastics. He returned to Prof. Holmes’ research group, based at the Tyndall National Institute in University College Cork, in January 2009 to work as a Senior Researcher on an Enterprise Ireland funded Proof of Concept grant looking at the catalytic growth of graphene.
